new things for 2008... crystal ball gazing with opensource, social networking, digital identity, and more aka the predictions.

I was poking around trying to find a better video editor, when I stumbled across an opensource project called, Jahshaka. Jahshaka is positioning itself as being a fullbodied product that can compete with such software as finalcut pro (wow!). Not sure about that, because I could never (ever, ever) get the windows installer to work properly. Maybe if I had already switched to ubuntu ALREADY...

will portals win the social networking war?

Finally, some real contendors in aggregating social networking -- a centralized spot to collect all of YOUR web 2.0 stuff! Isn't it funny how there is all of this "stuff" and then the next step is to organize it and streamline it (sounds like cataloging, no)? Create the content and then organize it! ;-)Pageflakes has a lot of functionality in terms of creating a centralized social networking presence , plus the ability to pull in even more content.

practical & productive networking tools

A friend of mine who is a k-12 art teacher asked about getting started with social networking. She does a little blogging here and there, but she is knee deep in teaching at the moment, which limits her time online. I thought for a bit about how to respond to her question.

web 2.0 the bubble

In the course of doing a little research for a brief article on social networking for visual artists, I found a lot of new services and of course, what seems to be a lot more discussion about the potential Web 2.0/social networking bubble (perhaps, it is just cumulative effect). Will it happen? Oh sure, at some point....

new stuff popping up everywhere...

First off, stumbled across springshare which is web 2.0 apps for libraries. I guess it's about time someone created library specific applications to sell back to the library community. Of course, for some libraries with small budgets or suffering budget woes, opensource products or free stuff (del.icio.us) may be the only option. I'm not sure my library could afford to purchase this, if we were so inclined. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against opensource stuff, though.Out of microsoft labs, 3D modeling stuff.
