Semantic Web Technologies & Social Search (Introduction to Metadata)

This first chapter outlines the book but also includes a nice overview of metadata and how it fits into the web at large (and really all of the records we create). If you are new to metadata or interested in learning how metadata works on the web (& perhaps, try a few projects), you are definitely the audience we were targeting. While the context of the book is library related, the projects can easily be done by individuals, institutions, or businesses.

Metadata standards for objects, documents, & more

Early on I was on a committee that was charged with writing metadata standards using qualified Dublin Core (DC) for what would become the Institutional Repository for the Univ. System of Georgia Libraries.I worked on other parts of this initial project (Technical Oversight, Portal Design) too. Anyhow, I am particularly proud of how dedicated and diligent this group is in archiving institutional knowledge.

So I have an exhibit

I've been working alot on these water themed paintings and wall hangings. They are mixed media, acrylic (very sheer, layered over paper, and net)...< This one is titled, postcards from the deep. Like many of my paintings, this is not exactly what I had in mind when I started this one.

A history of automation and its impact on staffing (White paper/case study)

This white paper written by Virginia Feher and I started out as a conversation about the changes brought about by automation within the UGA Libraries. Over the years, I have documented some of the changes in automation (including 5 migrations/conversions of the ILS - Library catalog!) through discussions with colleagues within the Libraries and outside. This article not only provides a good overview of the impact of automation on one technical services unit within a library, but also a brief history of that automation.

Various teachings + speaking engagements

This evening I'm doing hands-on database and cataloging training (focus on metadata/cataloging and quality control) for the Owens Library; Tuesday and Weds, I am teaching for Lyrasis on FRBR (get FRBRized!) and then another session on
Introducing RDA: 1, Structure, Principles and Core Elements (Live Online)
which makes for lots of time juggling and very early mornings so

Goal for 2012: semantic web, rdf, linkeddata, & rda

Okay, so here is one of my goals I am pitching for next year: Become well versed in the fundamentals of RDA, focusing specifically on the changes between AACR2 and RDA, so that I can serve as a resource person for [my Unit]; additionally learn more about “future” data carriers: RDFa and other Semantic Web schemas and how they connect with FRBR, linkeddata and nexgen library softwares such as cloud based portals.--------------------- btw, I do realize that these things are already here (& I know a bit about them already) but I felt I needed to put something in writing; ditto for the RDA.
