on criticism and critique

On Sunday evenings I often attend a twitter chat called #blogchat. One regular topic is blog review. Bloggers will submit their blogs for review along with either questions for the group or insights into their vision/mission of their blogs. As with all critiques (especially online ones), these can turn personal and even mean-spirited.

If you post to Twitter, does twitter own your photos and artwork?

A few of us at twitter (thanks @ashuping) were having a discussion about images & creative commons which expanded to microblogging. A few months ago I read a really interesting post arguing that if you post an image through twitter it is essentially public and free to be used by anybody (or at least that is how I read the article).

How can you tell if it's an Auto DM (Twitter)?

I do use DM (direct messages) in Twitter to "email" my Twitter followers and those I follow, esp. if it's of a more personal nature. My DMs are always real; however, some Twitter users use various tools to create an AutoDM. It can sometimes be hard to tell if a DM is "real" (actually handwritten by a person) or AUTO (generated by a bot based upon some criteria).

Controlling twitter notifications to your phone

Go to Settings>MobileText message notifications:Twitter will send alerts to your phone, depending on your settings. You can limit it to particular times (I would not want to receive alerts in the middle of the night), or particular types of messages. You can limit to only those you allow to send to send alerts via twitter (perhaps, your family, dearest friends, or your boss, if you tweet for work); to direct messages, as well as mentions and replies. So, you'll want to think about how many times you want twitter to alert your phone and for what.
