One family's digital archive (& mine too!)

Really interesting story of one family's attempt to digitize and archive their photographs (http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2012/07/one-familys-personal-digital-archives-project/))  but what I found most interesting is that their challenges mirror what my family has been through with this process. I also found it interesting that they decided to use Picasa (Google software) for image editing.

Ordinary vs. extraordinary bosses

Some really interesting thoughts in this article and I suggest you read the entire article but to summarize, extraordinary bosses:
  • see the entire organization (no internal fighting)  of a community -- not just workers ( e.g., cogs in the machine) and as "peers not children"
  • delegate and do not micromanage ("They push decision making downward, allowing teams form their own rules and intervening only in emergencies.")
  • are inspiring, forward thinking, and see technology as a tool for employee empowerment and ensure that appropriate technology is available
  • know that

Read it later & offline too!

A handy and now free tool that you can use to read your favorite content (like content divergent) offline... Read it later has been renamed "pocket" and is now free.http://getpocket.com/very useful little app you can use to save any web page to read later...Once saved to Pocket, the list of content is visible on any device -- phone, tablet or computer.

Artists are against SOPA too

I was hoping that SOPA was truly dead, but it's not. We do need to address piracy but not at the sake of controlling the internet - CENSORSHIP! One of the largest advocates for SOPA is the MPAAA, the organization responsible for censoring movies in the 1930s aka the Hays Code. (yeah, that was a great idea.... not)I think it's important to remember that a big part of the equation is copyright and it FAILS for digital objects.

Facebook, wifi & security - what you need to know

I actually talk quite a bit about wifi and security (and even in connection with Facebook) in the class I'm teaching this week (it falls under the "how to keep your private life... private" section...)----------------------------------If you use facebook, make sure you change the security settings. The default behavior is over http and this Wi-Fi sniffing app (facesniff) for Android is gaining a lot of traction.
